The French government founded the “Ecole de Medicine de Pondicherry” in 1823, which served as the foundation for the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER). The new medical college’s foundation was established in 1956, and the hospital opened its doors in 1964. In 2008, JIPMER was designated as a national institution by the Indian government’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is a facility set up for patient treatment, education, and research in the field of health. JIPMER occupies 192 acres. The facility has four residential complexes, seven hospital blocks, an academic center, a nursing college, one administration block, and seven buildings for supplementary services. There are 12 main categories of medical, nursing, and allied health science courses offered, spanning everything from foundational to ultra-specialized training.
JIPMER is one of the very few institutions in the nation that offers instruction in subjects ranging from undergraduate studies to super- and sub-specialties, conducts ground-breaking research, and offers specialist treatment of the highest caliber. JIPMER is a unique model in the nation since it offers free specialized medical treatment while upholding quality and safety. JIPMER is an example of how specialty care will be delivered in the future because of its success in offering the greatest care, even to those in society who can least afford it. JIPMER is still rated as one of the top five medical schools in the nation. In addition to the soon-to-be-opened screening OPD block and super specialty extension block, JIPMER is expanding with the addition of additional campuses including JIPMER Karaikkal and the JIPMER outreach center at Yanam. During this time, conceptual designs for the Institute of Organ Transplantation and Institute of Advanced Trauma and Rehabilitation’s second site in Puducherry were started.
