In 1998, the University of Madras approved the establishment of the Aarupadai Veedu Institute of Technology (AVIT). Some time later, it became associated with Anna University in Chennai. AVIT is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Council of Architecture (COA), Government of India, and in 2004 was granted university status as part of the Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (VMRF) – Deemed to be University Salem under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. The campus has 24.11 acres of land on Old Mahabalipuram Road (Rajiv Gandhi Salai) and has a constructed space of 5.65 million square feet. The institution has made a firm commitment to serving students from all walks of life financially. The institution provides Full-time (Regular) undergraduate study in ten different majors, including Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) and Postgraduate study in seven different majors, including Master of Business Administration (MBA). The institute also provides five undergraduate programmes and six graduate programmes that can be taken in the “Part-Time (Regular)” format. Students have access to the internet around the clock thanks to the campus’s 200 Mbps broadband Wi-Fi network.

The University has adopted Outcome Based Education (OBE), Structured Choice Based Credit System (SCBCS) for all programmes, and introduced Skill Based Learning and Research Based Learning into the Teaching and Learning process. The University’s major programmes have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).
There is a sufficient number of modern laboratories and classrooms at this institution. In addition to the individual departments’ available computer resources, the institution maintains a central computing infrastructure. Textbooks, encyclopaedias, national and international magazines, a video collection, and digital resources for distance learning are all available in the library at this institution. NSS Units help students get ready for community service by introducing them to various aspects of community life. There are three NSS Units, each with 300 members (boys and girls), and three NSS officials who actively organise blood donation camps, village adoption programmes, and literacy programmes. The Administration plans to host outreach programmes for social misfits. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has granted the university permission to begin implementing the Unnat Bharath Abhiyan (UBA) Scheme in 2018. The company’s leadership is committed to teamwork, and hence partnerships have been forged with several sectors, including business and academia. A number of organisations, including Bosch, Intel, Tech Mahindra, Infosys campus connect, GSS corp Japan, Satsang Research Institute, Baba Clinical and Genomic Research Centre, Chennai, NASSCOM, ICTACT, IYF, and others, have inked MoUs with the university. Collaborations like these improve many aspects of education and development, including teaching, learning, research, technical and professional training, consulting, project quality, and the sharing of technologies. There are a number of international institutions with which the Institute has signed memorandums of understanding. Partnership with Arkansas State University (USA), Edinburgh Napier University (UK), and Naresuan University (Thailand) to Advance Education and Scholarship. In addition, an MOU for a semester-long exchange programme has been struck between the university and Oakland University in the United States.
The management is committed to coordinating and strengthening R&D efforts across all divisions, therefore they’ve formed a cross-departmental R&D cell led by the director of engineering and technology research. Each department’s Thrust Area Research Groups (TARG) have been developed after identifying the department’s research priorities for each department’s many disciplines. The eleven Centers of Excellence (CoE) in Nanotechnology, Alternative Fuels, Intel IoT, Renewable Energy Technology, etc. have been established by the institution. Renewable Energy, Bio-Fuels, Bio-Technology, Communication Systems, and Structural Engineering are all areas in which AVIT excels at conducting research. The Institution 2and the funding agencies like Department of Science and Technology(DST), Government of India,Defense Research and Development Organistaion(DRDO) Department of Informational Technology(DIT), Government of India, Department of Bio-Technology, Government of India, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), etc. are sponsoring and co-sponsoring Annual Conferences – National and International in all identified thrust areas. Institute Innovation Cell(IIC) at AVIT has been approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD) of the Government of India for conducting innovative projects, filing patents, launching startups, and commercialising products. AVIT has also begun an Innovation Acceleration programme in partnership with UC Berkeley and Intel FICE to educate students on how to create business models and commercially viable projects.
The University has installed a 126 kWp grid-connected solar power plant and a 2 kW stand-alone wind mill to meet the growing demand for electricity on campus. In 2014, researchers at a dedicated Renewable Energy Technology lab began exploring the potential of solar and wind power. In addition, 9 patents have been filed as a result of student research conducted under faculty supervision.
Through the Infosys Campus Connect Program, the Career Development and Placement Cell offers pre-placement training in areas such as critical thinking, problem-solving, language ability, group dynamics, and interviewing to students in their final academic year before graduation. The institution offers both on-campus and off-campus placement opportunities. Several different businesses, such as Satyam Computers Services Limited, Wipro, Robert Bosch, Larsen & Toubro InfoTech, Lion Bridge, Syntel, FL Smidth, Wartsila Diesel India Ltd, Carborandum Universal, Murugappa Industries Limited, Sundaram Clayton, Sutherland Global Services, Hindustan Computers Limited, Slash Support, etc., visited the campus. Human Resources (HR) Meet, Job Fair, and Placement Day are annual events at AVIT to find placements for all graduating students. In addition, we hold a world cultural camp to which we invite kids from four different nations to share in cultural activities. Avit is linked with Madras Productivity Council and encourages third-year students to begin their own cottage industries, ensuring that they leave the programme with a degree and the business acumen to succeed in the world of work.
The institution’s boys’ and girls’ dorms are located in separate buildings, with capacities of 1000 and 400 students, respectively. The usual menu at the hostel meal includes both North Indian and South Indian dishes, meeting the residents’ needs. The institution features a large sports complex with football and basketball fields. The campus and the dorms have access to a recreation centre with indoor games. The hostel has a fully equipped gymnasium with separate facilities for male and female students. Also available at all times is an ambulance service. For the convenience of students, ICICI Bank has installed an ATM hub on campus. The Institution has its own transportation system, so it’s easy to go around town. From Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Thirukalukundram, and Kalpakkam, as well as central Chennai, the Institution runs its own fleet of buses.
Self-control and dedication are rewarded at the Institution. On Annual Sports Day, students (both boys and girls) get recognition for their sports achievements and the winners of any relevant championships. Cultural contests (CREA) are held annually to find and reward exceptional artists. On College Day, the best students from each major get honorary diplomas and trophies in recognition of their achievements. Mrs. Annapoorani Gold medal and cash reward are presented to the best graduating students of the institution for achievement in academics, co-curricular activities, and extra-curricular pursuits alike. The recipient of this honour receives their prize during their final academic semester. Yoga, meditation, ethics, and disaster management are taught to all AVI students, and the institution’s top student is awarded the Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram Gold Medal and a monetary prize on graduation day. AVI is unique among educational institutions in its emphasis on student growth.
