Affiliated with the University of Madras, Meenakshi College for Women is an autonomous, government-aided institution of higher education for women. The College was established in 1975, the International Women’s Year, on a spacious campus in the centre of the metropolitan city of Chennai.
The College is administered by the Ganapathi Educational Trust, of which Late Sri. R. Venkataraman, the former President of India, was the Founding Chairman and Late Prof. K. R. Sundararajan (KRS), who was essential in conceptualising and establishing the College, was the Founding Secretary. Prof. KRS’s daughter, Dr. K. S. Lakshmi, was the Trust’s founding principal and current secretary.
The College today enrols about 3000 women and offers close to 40 undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degree programmes in the Arts, Sciences, and Business.

Accepting, respecting, and attending to student differences and diversity, including physical, cognitive, intellectual, social, and emotional elements, has enabled the College to provide inclusive education. This is obvious in the numerous support systems built by the College, which include faculty mentoring and peer-supported learning in the form of peer tutoring. There has never been any type of hazing within the College. Only the senior students and faculty members extend a warm welcome and make the newcomers feel comfortable.
